The University of Basrah is aware of the importance of waste generated by various university activities, which produces a lot of waste. Recycling is one of the sustainability factors of environmental protection, so the university urges students and staff to share environmental protection responsibility. The university has initiated some projects and organized activities related to waste treatment and recycling, such as toxic waste recycling, organic waste treatment, inorganic waste treatment, and waste treatment processes, including policies to reduce paper and plastic consumption on campus.

Regarding the environmental impact of our practices, Basrah University authorities have been paying attention to paper and plastics and their effect on the environment. As a result, some procedures have been established to reduce paper and plastic use on campus. These plans help reduce carbon dioxide emissions, leading to a cleaner environment

Some instructions and guidelines have been found between campus offices, such as:

-Think before you print

– Double-sided printing

– Re-use paper

– E-meeting system

– Stop unwanted mails

Nowadays, the problem of the increase in the amount of waste; the inability to eliminate waste immediately explains the cause and impact of waste pollution that causes environmental pollution. Most of all solid waste is organic waste, such as food waste, vegetables, fruits, and weeds. This kind of waste is collected and carries out of campuses by the Municipality of Basra by garbage trucks. The idea of Organic waste can be fermented will make the burden worthwhile. It can also help reduce waste management system problems, reduce disposal costs, and reduce the amount of waste that needs to be buried.

Waste treatment was developed at the University of Basrah -College of Medicine. The project’s main purpose was to get rid of the organic waste products that routinely result from the clinical medical education like the waste products of the department of Anatomy and the Department of Pathology.

Toxic waste is generated in the laboratory of the University of Basrah. These materials are first collected and stored in temporary containers. These containers are sorted and clearly labeled, and well-trained technicians will provide instructions on waste packaging and labeling. After that, fill out the documents to meet national and international regulations requirements and prepare until the records are extracted from the authorized company.
